Developing the Runner
One of the most important elements of developing your middle distance program is finding the right athletes. Halliday describes what to look for in prospective athletes and where to look for them. Seasonal Planning and Organization
Garcia focuses his planning around a traditional high school season--8-10 weeks on the track with training beginning in late February. Garcia breaks down the season into a 3-phase training plan:

  • The Habit Phase - This early season phase focuses on conditioning and establishing consistent approaches by forming good habits. Consistent approaches lead to consistent heights!
  • Mid-Season Phase - A 3-4 week phase characterized by "developmental meets" and hard training.
  • Championship Phase - This focuses on fine tuning for regional and state championship competition.
